The two largest of the islands, Shangchuan (上川) and Xiachuan (下川), are the site of one of Taishan's sixteen towns (镇, ''zhen'') (their namesakes); all other islands, islets, outcroppings and reefs in the archipelago lie within the jurisdiction of the town. However, the town's seat is located on the mainland in Shanjudahaicun.
